Vancouver Landfill Project, British ColumbiaOur 7.4 MW electrical and 9.1 MW thermal landfill gas cogeneration project in Delta, BC was connected to the BC Hydro grid in 2003. All electricity is sold to BC Hydro under a 20-year green energy contract. Thermal energy – in the form of hot water and surplus landfill gas for a gas boiler – is sold to the Village Farms Canada Limited Partnership greenhouses. Landfill gas is delivered to the plant via a 2.9 kilometre pipeline from a flare station at the City of Vancouver landfill. In the past, methane gas was flared; today, our facility utilizes the methane, an alternative that offers significant environmental advantages.
Our landfill project in Vancouver is a landmark in environmental efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40,000 tonnes per year – equivalent to eliminating 8,000 cars permanently from Lower Mainland streets.
